Famous (& obscure) things to do in DC

When we first arrived in DC, there was a list in our dorm lobby of "Obvious and Not So Obvious DC Attractions". The list includes everything from the White House to Georgetown M street, from the famous to the less notable. Since then we've been checking attractions off and have been having a great time seeing so much of the city. Below are some of the things you too can do if you ever chance to visit or live in DC.

THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS

I think we would vote this our favorite building so far. It's so ornately painted and decorated and the sun hits the windows so beautifully in the afternoon. Last week we even took a nap on one of the benches and watched the sun begin to set out the windows. It was breathtaking.

THE CAPITOL BUILDING

We took a tour of the capitol on Friday. It's also an incredible building; a definite must-see.

THE NATIONAL BOTANIC GARDENS

The gardens are less famous than other attractions on the National Mall, but no less beautiful. One Saturday we took our lunch and ate in the jungle area.

THE BUREAU OF ENGRAVING AND PRINTING

This is where they print money. Visiting and watching the process helps hit home the realization that it is just paper. Ben was nice enough to let me buy a bag of shredded money. I don't know why, but I thought it was such a novelty. Everyone made fun of me, but I knew they were all jealous of my souvenir.

THE THOMAS JEFFERSON MEMORIAL

THE ALBERT EINSTEIN MONUMENT

This is a pretty cool statue, although I wouldn't go out of the way to see it. We went at night. Maybe that's why this picture looks creepy.

THE NATIONAL ZOO

Yesterday we had a great time seeing the famous pandas and lion cubs at the National Zoo. It was so fun, and free!
